Burger King's breakfast menu is smokin'

The fast-food chain is expanding its morning menu with a test of the new Smoky Maple Chicken Biscuit in two markets.

Burger King is betting on breakfast and chicken, testing its new Smoky Maple Chicken Biscuit in the Kansas City and Orlando-Daytona Beach markets starting Monday.

The new offering joins two other sandwiches—a regular Chicken Biscuit and the Smoky Maple Chicken Croissan’wich—on BK’s breakfast menu.

The Smoky Maple Chicken Biscuit features breaded white meat chicken with a smoky maple glaze on a warm buttermilk biscuit. It will be available through Aug. 31 while supplies last.

Burger King has been ramping up its chicken offerings recently, including the addition of Spicy Chicken Fries in March and a new line of BK Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwiches launched last year. Sales of the chain’s previous premium chicken sandwich, introduced in 2021 when the chicken sandwich wars were heating up, failed to win over consumers.

Accelerated menu innovation, coupled with Burger King’s “Reclaim the Flame” marketing and digital campaign, pushed up same-store sales 8.7% in Q1 of 2023.

Breakfast has proven to be a hot daypart for Burger King rival Wendy’s, which introduced its morning menu in 2020 and has since seen sales grow as consumers return to pre-pandemic routines. While Burger King also offers more traditional breakfast choices, including sandwiches with eggs, bacon and sausage, chicken is now in the a.m. spotlight at the Miami-based fast-food chain.
